Bangladesh Plastic Pollution Reduction through Industrial Symbiosis Matching (B-PRISM) under Sustainable Manufacturing and Pollution (SMEP)

Objectives:

SMEP is a £20 million project funded by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and is implemented in partnership with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to identify and invest in emerging technologies or processes that mitigate the harmful environmental and social impacts of pollution from manufacturing sectors in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The programme targets a range of manufacturing sectors involving commodities such as: textiles, clothing, leather, light manufacturing, household products, chemicals and petrolchemicals, rubber and plastics. SMEP also focuses on generating evidence and practical solutions to address the problem of ocean plastic pollution. The programme has three core components: a) Research to develop the evidence to support practical solutions with a high chance of uptake and impact; b) Developing and testing innovative technology-based solutions that improve the environmental impacts of manufacturing; and c) Identifying and developing suitable supporting business models and policies to adopt innovative technology-based solutions.

Services:

The programme will be delivered in three phases:

Phase 1:

  • Research: gather and analyse data from companies and public dataset
  • Network: engage with partner networks, key stakeholders, develop strategy, confirm key players, grow alliances
  • Report: size opportunities for pollution mitigation through IS, stakeholder engagement.

Phase 2:

  • Network: engage with partner networks, key stakeholders, develop strategy, confirm key players, grow alliances
  • Training: Establish in country team and train on delivery/support processes for industrial symbiosis
  • Engage: resource-matching workshops to gather company data and identify quick-wins
  • Facilitate: quick-win IS opportunities to reuse plastic manufacturing waste
  • Report: multiple synergies, track impacts using SYNERGie®.
  • Capacity: investigate investment opportunities for new capacity

Phase 3:

  • Network: engage with partner networks, key stakeholders, develop strategy, confirm key players, grow alliances
  • Training: Establish second in country team and train on delivery/support processes for industrial symbiosis (budget does not allow for full teams to be established in year 2)
  • Engage: resource-matching workshops to gather company data and identify match opportunities
  • Facilitate: short and medium term IS opportunities to reuse plastic manufacturing waste
  • Report: multiple synergies, track impacts using SYNERGie®.
  • Capacity: investigate investment opportunities for new capacity

The Project will involve the development of a facilitated industrial symbiosis network and the production of various datasets, stakeholder groups, business opportunity workshops and completed industrial symbiosis matches (hereinafter referred to as ‘Deliverables’).
